Greetings Opera Cocktales Fans, Friends and Family!!
The word prism is often used figuratively to describe a way of looking at or thinking about something that causes you to see or understand it in a different way. Or, as a way of pointing out the clarification or distortion afforded by a particular viewpoint. In that sense, if we use the second definition, we might say that we live in acutely prismatic times. For better, or often worse, viewpoints have taken the center stage of our current world.
For those of us actually on stage, (or, in our case, the spot-lighted front of the piano bar) inhabiting a musical character is a kind of prism. We search every nuance of the music and words until we create a kind of refraction – light and sound bent through our voices transforming into an aria, a duet, a scene, a performance.
This months Opera Cocktales shows us the many faces (or facets) of our favorite vocal works via Latin America (Ginastera),
Spain (Barbieri and Jimenez) and land finally in Italy with Puccini (Tosca) and Verdi (Macbeth).
